What to expect
I understand that deciding to go into counselling and psychotherapy for the first time is a big deal. Or perhaps you are returning to a therapeutic relationship, having seen a counsellor or therapist in the past. Here is a brief outline of what to expect from working with me.
Setting up an initial session
After making contact with me via email or telephone, we would set up a convenient appointment to meet for an initial session. This day and time would usually become your weekly appointment slot.
What to expect from the initial session
The initial session is about getting to know you and why you have come to counselling and psychotherapy, now, at this current time in your life. We will seek to understand what it is you want to change and whether there are any influences from your past which you believe may be affecting your life, negatively.
Our work together
We would usually agree to work together for 6 weeks (6 sessions), initially, which allows time for me to really get to know you and for us to understand your past and present difficulties more fully. This time also allows you to see if I am the right therapist for you. From here, we can agree to work on what will be most important in bringing about the changes you want to see in your life. The course of counselling and psychotherapy is open-ended and tailored to each individual.
We will continue to review our progress together at regular intervals, to celebrate your gains and to identify what more you wish to explore, until such a time as our work comes to an end.
